Cooking & Cleaning

The bark is cleaned and boiled in wood-ash water for several hours. This natural alkaline solution softens the fibers without the use of harsh chemicals, preserving the organic strength.

Hand Beating

Artisans rhythmically beat the softened fibers with wooden mallets on stone blocks. This physical labor breaks down the fibers into a smooth, creamy pulp, essential for high-quality paper.

Sun Drying

The frames are laid out on open hillsides to dry under the intense Himalayan sun. This natural drying process gives Lokta paper its unique texture and incredible durability.

Refining the Texture

Once dry, each sheet is carefully peeled from the frame. The edges are left raw—known as "deckle edges"—preserving the authentic, organic feel of the paper. Every single sheet undergoes a rigorous inspection for consistency, weight, and texture by our master craftsmen before it is ready for your story.
